Broken
She puts on a new face every morning.
Every smile she gives, there’s a crack. The mask on her face stays flawless all
day but when she comes home, the mask opens. Her face is barely held together.
She’s broken.
Rationale
The story is about a girl who hides her emotions and
pretends she is a perfect girl. But in reality she’s slowly breaking down on
the inside because of unsaid thoughts. The self-portrait I feel was perfect for
my story.
I did my makeup as flawlessly as possible but then put
a zipper on my face. The zipper was to represent the mask the girl opens at the
end of the day. Underneath the open zipper is cracked, broken skin. For every
fake smile in the story, her face broke more. Broken on the inside, fake on the
outside. The inner face cracking represents how you feel on the inside when you
hide your emotions. The longer you hide, the more you break.

Personality
and bias. We all have them but not everyone has the same idea of how we got
them. There are many theories about how we grew into our bias and personalities
such as we got them from our parents. That what our parents taught and how they
acted in front of us formed our personalities and bias. Another group of people
agree with that but also think it’s what we have experienced in our lives is
what shaped us. Some people think that their personality sticks with them their
whole life and that’s who we are. But other people disagree and believe we are
constantly changing our personalities and that in fact they don’t even exist
because of how inconsonant they are.
The
personality myth is exactly that. That our personalities really don’t exist due
to how we act around different people and what we change into overtime. Everyone acts differently for different people
and everyone changes overtime. “There
are no good or bad people” (Invisibilia Podcast “The Personality Myth), meaning
no one is constantly bad or constantly good. That someone could done something
bad in the past but changed and doesn’t act the same anymore. Or the other way
around with someone who used to do only good and now does bad things. The past
cannot change but people can.
I completely
agree with the theory of the personality myth. People do change, every day, all
the time. When we are little we tend to be gullible to what our parents say but
as we are introduced to the public, internet, and television we start to adapt
our own thoughts and feelings. An example of this is that I have my parents’
sense of humor because I grew up with it but still have different opinions on
subjects because I learned out them myself. I learned other sides and stories
so I could have my own thoughts on the subject myself, not just my parents. I
can also relate to the idea of not having a consistent personality because
while I’m at school, I’m very quiet and reserved but with my friends I’m loud
and outgoing. In all honesty most people, including myself, most likely don’t
know what kind of personality they have. They just think they know. Our
environment is constantly changing and without knowing it we change with it. No
one is the same person they were a year ago. We constantly build our character
but only in certain situations the real you comes out. We are all hidden under
our own skin. Everyone wants to be the
personality they describe themselves as but if people always stayed the same,
the world wouldn’t be as interesting as it is now.

Your piece is very good at describing a person as fragile, this helps drive the point home. to me I see this as saying that people should be more true to themselves and be honest with the people around them.
ReplyDeleteYour male up skills are so great! I thought it was photo shopped until you explained it was your own work! I enjoyed your picture and the concept behind it. I agree that everyday you pretend to be a different person part of your real person in a way breaks.
ReplyDeleteYour piece is very good at showing the consequences of hiding your emotions on the outside but your true feelings remain on the inside. Your piece also complements your one pager very well with the way you described people having different personalities depending on the people they are around. I agree with you on that idea and your image kind of portrays that too because it also could be interpreted as your unzipping your true personality.
ReplyDeleteYour image and your flash fiction are good representations of how putting a mask over your feelings can make your inner self crack and break. I hope you find someone that you feel safe enough to tell them how you're feeling so you don't have to hold all that weight down on yourself. You did a good job of making your I say seem personal and genuine and not just you trying to bullshit an essay for class. Overall you have really good writing and I feel like you have a great grasp on how to express what you're feeling with things other than words.
ReplyDeleteDanggg!! I love your flash fiction and how it connects with the picture! The picture looks awesome. The piece kinda reminds me of my flash fiction and how we aren’t truly our self at school or around our peers.
ReplyDeleteYour whole piece is amazing. I especially loved your self-portrait, so deep and meaningful even without an explanation. Your flash fiction was good also, why did you choose to write it in second person? Your authors note was very touching, I know that it must have been really hard for you to open up like that, but your vulnerability really makes the piece. I applaud your bravery! Your one pager is very strong, especially your I say. I love how you used personal examples as well as examples from the podcast we listened to in class. Do you think that we are in charge of our changing personalities or is it just random based on our experiences? Can we really be who we want to be? I love your project! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI chose to write the piece in second person to prove the mask point even more. That sometimes I get so detached from who I really am that I refer to the fake side as another person. She can improve her life if she opens her mask and fixes the pieces but instead she zips up again, going through another day of breaking.
DeleteI like the way your portrait fits into your rationale. Your portrait can be interpreted in many different ways, but your rationale explains the meaning you wanted to show in your portrait. Your I say is put together well and it clearly shows your stand point on if personality can change or not.
ReplyDelete"The past cannot change but people can." This is the perfect example of how the most significant ideas can be understood in the simplest term. You can really hear your voice coming through in this piece.Even though it is an academic analysis, it sounds like you are talking to us honestly and authentically.
ReplyDeleteFav line:"In all honesty most people, including myself, most likely don’t know what kind of personality they have."
ReplyDeleteI really like you're picture and how it goes with you're rationale. I love this piece because I relate to this.
