//Promise//
'I’m sorry'. 'I love you'.
please believe in me like you did then

My younger self, about 3 or 4, sits in a temple. Praying for people she never truly knew. Next to her is another picture of me, just years older. To me, the picture represents what goes through my head. It’s an ongoing cycle of me trying to be good enough, feeling like a disappointment, staying strong, and believing that they’re truly with me. Every single time I screw up, I feel as if they’ve stopped believing in me. Of course, everything I do is in honour of my parents. I do nothing for myself. At the end of the day, I just wish for them to be proud of me. So I'll apologise as many times as I have to so they know I'm making our family look good. As I've gotten older, the fire in my heart has blown out and re lit. Each time, a piece of me dies. On that day, a very big piece of me died. And at the end of the day, I will keep the promise I made with them.

They say, personality is who you are. It’s what you’re born with. Some experts claim that it’s impossible to change one's personality, no one can automatically change overnight. Throughout history, we’ve categorised people with certain personality traits as either good or bad. Aspects of people who commit mass murders tend to be similar across the board. People in society are known for having a bias, whether or not they are aware of it. We stereotype people and assign them personality traits based on others like them.
In “The Personality Myth” a man named Dan is one of the main subjects. He and many others like him live in a high security prison. The interviewer, not knowing of his crimes, acted and treated him as if they had been good friends. “It was as if the man is trying to remake himself from the outside in” (Personality). By this, she implies that on the outside, personality can be deceiving. She had spent so much time with these men that the thought of what they had done to land them in the prison flew right over her head. To her, there had to be something evil inside them that couldn’t just up and disappear. Later on though, she realises that “At the center of everyone’s story is their personality” (Personality).It is possible for good people to make bad decisions, but that does not make their personality.
I believe that we have the ability to change our personalities and bias if we really want to. No one should tell you what you are supposed to act like or who you are supposed to be. I honestly think that at different points in people’s lives, we are different people. Who we were in middle school is not necessarily the same person we are today. We see it all the time when someone goes through an emotionally scarring point in life. I think people have the ability to change their personality’s. So that brings up the point, what even is our true personality? Is it who are parents shaped us as, is it a self-identified being, or is it what society shapes us to be?

I thought this flash fiction was very deep with out portraying it in obvious words. I really liked how personal it was because it helps to understand what the photo really represents. I loved the picture too because you made it, and it shows more artistry and has more of a back story.
ReplyDeleteI loved how personal this piece was and how you really showed yourself through it. The picture relates to the piece perfectly and I like how you are sitting with yourself, still making promises. Describing how you felt then and now really added a nice flow to your one pager since in the end your conclusion was that we aren't the same as we were. The one pager was in a great format and made great arguments. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteFlash fiction - very good, I read it yesterday and today and was impressed both times. Was powerful. One pager was very well written and included a lot of information, good job on that, it was difficult to have to stretch mine out. Great job all around.
ReplyDeleteYou did a really good job of conveying emotion through your flash fiction. I loved it. Your rationale does a good job of explaining exactly what your portrait was meant to show us. I like the direction you went in with your one pager. I really do think it's true that people change over the course of their lives.
ReplyDeleteI relate to this piece on a deep level. Great connection with the image and emotion.
ReplyDeleteI can tell exactly how your flash fiction tied into your authors note. You picked a 'theme' for your piece and stuck with it the whole way through, which can be hard to do sometimes so great job. I liked how you photo shopped the piece so you're old self and new self are in it. I think that this ties in really well to the personality changes that become prevalent in your authors note and 1 pager.
ReplyDeleteThe flash fiction and rationale is written very well, And your one-pager really backs up on what you think about personality and bias.
ReplyDeleteI relate to this a lot and I feel like lots of people can relate.
