Decisions (SHARK) NOT CLICK BAIT

Text Box: Cameron Calkins                                                  Decisions
This image resembles many things in my life. From the bright colors, the way I am riding the shark, and me sticking my hand so close to the shark’s mouth. The shark resembles fear and it took about an hour to finally catch fear out of the deep blue. Without hesitation, I jumped on the shark and pulled his face up to take a good picture.

                                                       Flash Fiction
You want something for yourself but you are tired of fear getting in the way. You are afraid that it will hurt others. You want something that will tear up a relationship but it’s been your dream since you were a kid. You want to listen to everyone else but that little voice in your head keeps telling you to do it. It’s been your dream and you’ve always been amused by it. All of the Camouflage, the guns, the tanks, the helicopters. But all of the blood, the sweat, horror, death, and tears.
                                                        Rationale
I chose that picture because I feel like I can create some kind of image and story behind it so it can be looked at in many different ways if you think about it enough. I used the shark to resemble fear in life and the bright colors to resemble happiness. I believe that you should have many options in your life and not let one thing hold you down. Fear can do that to someone and I show in this picture that you can overcome anything and either get eaten by fear or jump on top of it and ride it.
My flash fiction is related by showing how you want something but there is always something in the way and you need to overcome and take control. Though my flash fiction is about joining the military and my picture is about overcoming fear, there both connected because joining the military is full of fear and if you do not overcome it, you have the chance of making a mistake, which could cost your life.
                                                    Reflection
These past 8 weeks have been a struggle in making this project because I am a procrastinator and could not come up with many ideas. I personally do not like writing or talking about my feeling because its either I do not even know them myself or I just don’t care. I believe that I am a hardheaded person who will never take a no for an answer and i like to challenge myself with very hard mental and physical situations. From our reader response packet “personality is a myth”, they say, “People like to keep their beliefs in a bubble”.  I believe in this because I tend to do this to feel unique and make myself feel confident and smart in my decisions. A lot of people like to stay in a bubble and not explore any other ideas about anything else because they believe in what they were told or to stubborn to open up to new ideas. Personality is a thing you can control or get controlled by. There is a lot of different bias’s and beliefs out there in this world and everyone has their own opinion. These beliefs can be developed along the years of your childhood and just stuff you hear growing up. A lot of people like to stick to those general beliefs because it’s just easier to understand. They say how people with different beliefs are rebels and unique. Some what is true but really it’s just who you are and what you want to believe in. You can do what you want and believe in what you want. Some people like to stick to things that were good at because we are addicted to our own limitations.

  2. I really liked how you related your picture and your flash fiction. Looking at them separately, they are two very different things but the way you connected them together and made them make sense tied it together really well. One of my favorite parts of this was the last sentence in your reflection. I think that was a really strong finish.

  3. I liked how you have a shark in the picture to resemble the fear in your life and how you are overcoming it. I also liked the last idea in your reflection because it is a very true statement. Some of us can't get over our own limitations. Some of us are afraid to try new things.

  4. Good job making the connection between the picture and your flash fiction. Rationale was good and helped me understand everything better. And yeah like Kim said, the one pager is out of order but that should be easily fixed, just cut and paste.

  5. Cam this was really good, that picture was so cool, I would've never been as brave as you to do that. Your flash fiction was amazing because you have a dream but with that dream comes work and fear, your rational is awesome and you one pager really shows who you are , awesome job.

  6. I understand your post perfectly, i'm assuming you are thinking about enlisting and the fear of that is shown by the shark. If you can grab the physical fear you can overcome fear of other dangers as well, i also plan on enlisting and i think it's something that would be priceless for the rest of your life. I also understand your message. You're into the shooting and fighting and all of that pulls you closer to a military job, which is exactly how i feel. good image and message that both tie together great!

  8. Good stuff, I understand the meaning of this 100%. Overcome your fears to do greater things in life. Many can relate not everyone but the majority. Doing something new and probably even scary and overcoming it can make yourself feel and understand better on who you are.
